According to worshipers, the soldiers stormed the church with Armoured Personnel Carriers to the Glory House Parish of the church on Oti Street, off Aka Avenue, Effurun and ordered worshipers to vacate the premises of the church.
A source at the scene of the incident said: “We were preparing for service when they (soldiers) came. They were menacing and prevented us from continuing the service. We had no option but to close.”
When the commanding officer, 13 Battalion, Lt Colonel Patrick Igwe was contacted over the incident, he said that he was not aware of the invasion.
The Nation reported that this incident came on the heels of a similar attack on the church by thugs.
Revered Fred Iyorhiobhe, a senior pastor of the church confirmed the incident to reporters.
He explained that it was a continuation of the act of terrorism by a factional leader of the church with the aid of police and military personnel.
Iyorhiobhe said: “We went to A Division Police Station to get protection. Today, we called the commander, who told us that he was not aware and did not give any such order.”
It was learnt that for the invention of the police, the incident would have degenerated into a bloody clash.
The clergyman who is backing Bishop Emeka faction, called on security agents to protest law-abiding worshipers and avoid taking sides in the crisis.
He frowned at the actions of opposing pastors saying: “I wonder why they are doing this when the matter is in court.”
