Soldiers invade Assemblies of God Church
- Worshipers were chased out of the church by the rampaging troops who were said to be under the direction of a factional leader of the church
- A senior pastor of the church said similar incident played out when suspected thugs stormed the church
A new twist has been added to the crisis rockling the Assemblies of God Church as troops on Sunday, February 14, invaded Effurun, Delta state branch of the church.
A source at the scene of the incident said: “We were preparing for service when they (soldiers) came. They were menacing and prevented us from continuing the service. We had no option but to close.”
The Nation reported that this incident came on the heels of a similar attack on the church by thugs.
Revered Fred Iyorhiobhe, a senior pastor of the church confirmed the incident to reporters.
He explained that it was a continuation of the act of terrorism by a factional leader of the church with the aid of police and military personnel.
It was learnt that for the invention of the police, the incident would have degenerated into a bloody clash.
The clergyman who is backing Bishop Emeka faction, called on security agents to protest law-abiding worshipers and avoid taking sides in the crisis.
He frowned at the actions of opposing pastors saying: “I wonder why they are doing this when the matter is in court.”
