What businesses can learn from teamwork at the World Cup

Image
Sport and business often seem to share common ground when it comes to performance. It’s not uncommon for businesses to use sports metaphors such as “down for the count,” “the ball’s in their court,” or “full court press.” As an Olympian, I’m often invited to speak at corporate events to inspire employees on setting goals or resiliency. But only recently has there been a burgeoning body of researchers in the field of sport psychology and organizational psychology exploring the parallels between sports and businesses. One study compared and contrasted the perceived factors of organizational success from the viewpoints of leaders in the fields of sport and business. The results revealed sport and business leaders identified more similar factors (e.g., leadership, communication and team cohesion) than differences. Many parallels exist between sports and business when it comes to success. The recent FIFA World Cup provides a unique opportunity to examine some of these paralle

Col. Bako, who was in charge of Akwa Ibom from December 1993 to August 1996, told Sun that he had no fear that if Buhari loses the election, there might be trouble in Nigeria. He, however, added that things would be calmer if Buhari hurriedly accepts defeat, adding that with his supporters, there might be trouble if he fails to do so. According to him, “Look Buhari, himself as a person, if he loses the election, he would pack and go back to Daura. “Buhari as a person would not shed the blood of a chicken to win election. Trump Bashes E.U. Over $5.1 Billion Fine for Google

Image
Image President Trump said on Thursday that the European Union’s $5.1 billion fine for Google was issued against “one of our great companies.” Credit President Trump resumed his criticism of the European Union on Thursday, assailing the bloc for the record antitrust fine it levied against the Silicon Valley giant Google this week. Mr. Trump has repeatedly denounced the 28-nation group, America’s biggest trading partner, for what he says are its unfair economic policies. His administration has imposed stiff tariffs on aluminum and steel imported from European Union companies, and is also considering placing similarly hefty levies on European cars and car parts. The president’s broader protectionist push, his specific labeling of the European Union as a “foe” on the issue of trade and his remarks raising questions about his commitment to NATO have led to  a substantial cooling of the relationship between the longtime trans-Atlantic allies. The European count

Entertainment: Back to the future: flying cars are becoming a reality

Image
In 2011, Peter Thiel confronted his Silicon Valley peers with this observation: “We were promised flying cars, but instead we got 140-character tweets.” Thiel wanted to know when the long-awaited innovations of the future were going to see the light of day. It seems that the future has made its comeback this past year. All of a sudden, everything is changing fast. Flying taxis are the talk of the town. So are supersonic and hypersonic flight. The tech sections of business media are overflowing with prototypes, projects and ideas for the future of mobility. These innovations are seen as newsworthy because they impact the user experience – as opposed to “under the hood” developments. But looking at the facts, it’s hard to deny that the pace of innovation in general across transport has been speeding up. Take aircraft. It’s not that the industry hasn’t innovated. Aircraft today are safer, cleaner, quieter and fly further than 50 years ago. But they’re not faster – most, i

Why most women experience breast reduction during family planning

It is no longer news that most women of this generation do not have plans of having so many children after marriage, which is why they opt out for family planning. This would help them have more space between their children but to help them plan their future as well. However, there are different types of family planning packages which can only be properly selected through the help of a medical expert. Some of these planning do not go down well with breastfeeding mothers as it may affect their baby. This does not mean that breastfeeding mothers cannot pick a family planning package but theirs would require special needs so it does not have any effect on the quality and quantity of milk her breast would produce. According to Healthline, birth control pills can affect your breast size but it can’t change breast size permanently. Before you begin using hormonal birth control, make sure you understand how it can affect your body and what side affects you may experience as this

Image

In a statement, Falana called on Buhari to release the former NSA on bail “in strict compliance with the orders of the Federal High Court of the Federal Capital Territory and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) court. The statement reads, “About two years ago, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (retd) was charged with a treasonable felony at the FCT High Court and money laundering at the Federal High Court. “Both trial courts admitted the defendant to bail pending trial. Even though the defendant met the stringent bail conditions the federal g

Omega 3 supplements have 'little or no benefits for heart health'

Image
Omega 3 supplements have little or no effect on the risk of heart disease, researchers report.Small amounts of omega 3 fats are essential for good health and can be naturally found in fatty fish such as salmon, as well as fish oils like cod liver oil. Increased consumption of omega 3 fats is widely promoted globally due to the common belief that it protects against heart disease, but academics from the University of East Anglia have now challenged that particular assertion. Combining the results of 79 randomised trials involving over 112,000 people, the researchers assessed the effects of consuming additional omega 3 fat, compared to usual or lower omega 3, on diseases concerning the heart and circulation. Accordingly, they found that increasing long-chain omega 3 provides little, if any, benefit in most studied outcomes. "We can be confident in the findings of this review which go against the popular belief that long-chain omega 3 supplements protect the heart," sai

This 'dating service' is helping young people in South Africa find work

Image
A few years ago, Thabo Ngwato's job prospects looked bleak. After graduating from high school, he started studying at the University of Johannesburg - but was forced to drop out when his mother retired and cash ran short. For a year and a half he hung around his home in a poor township in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, playing football with friends and occasionally making job applications in town. He got no response - not a surprise in a country with one of the world's most persistently high youth unemployment rates. In South Africa, a record 5.5 million young people are searching for work unsuccessfully, many living in slums far from big employers. But one day a friend mentioned to Ngwato he had found work through Harambee , a South African "youth employment accelerator" that links talent-hungry businesses with promising poor kids. "The best description I've heard is that we're a dating service and a finishing school," said Leb
