Senate passes petroleum industry governance bill

The Senate, on Thursday, passed the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill, which seeks to reform the nation’s oil and gas industry.
The PIGB is the first of four bills that replaced the well-known Petroleum Industry Bill, which suffered setbacks in two consecutive legislative tenures.
President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, who presided over the plenary on Thursday, said the lawmakers had broken the jinx of passing the bill.

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, refused to admit the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to bail. Justice Binta Nyako, in a ruling, held that since Kanu was earlier granted bail in 2017 and jumped the bail, the court must first determine the real reason he jumped the bail before applying for another one. Justice Nyako then dismissed the application for bail. The court had, on April 8, exonerated the Federal Government on the allegation that the leader of the IPOB was forcefully abducted abroad to stand his trial. Nyako, in a ruling, held that rendition for the purpose of criminal investigation is allowed. Nyako said since Kanu was on a bench warrant, the law allowed that anywhere he is sighted, he can be arrested and be brought to face his trial. “Rendition for the purpose of criminal investigation is allowed. “In the instant case, there is a bench warrant on the defendant (Kanu). Margaret Ekpo was one of the first female politicians in Nigeria and she made it her life's mission to fight for women in power movement. In an era of male-dominated movements towards indepence, Ekpo was able to play major roles as a politician in the Eastern part of Nigeria. Before she became a pioneer of female politics, she was a women's rights activist and a social mobiliser. Margaret Ekpo was born in 1914, Creek Town in Cross River state. She married a doctor, John Udo Ekpo, who was a civil servant.
