The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on Wednesday
admonished Nigerians not to engage in panic buying of petrol as there
was no plan to increase its price.
In a statement released in Abuja by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, the Corporation further assured motorists that there was enough supply in stock. “The Corporation has 1.3 billion litres stock of PMS, otherwise called petrol, which is sufficient to serve the nation for more than 38 days.
“This plea comes on the heels of reports that some motorists have begun panic buying of petrol, following rumours that the government is about to increase the pump price of the white product from N145 per litre.
“NNPC wishes to assure Nigerians that there is no iota of truth in the rumour that government is scheduled to adjust pump price of petrol.
“Indeed, with the resumption of production by the Corporation’s three refineries in Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Warri, complemented by imports, there is enough stock of petrol, diesel and kerosene.”
Ughamadu recalled that this point was explained on Tuesday NNPC Chief Operating Officer, Refineries, Mr. Anibor Kragha while briefing the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream in a presentation on the current status of the refineries at the National Assembly in Abuja.
He said, “In the presentation, Kragha told the legislators that the nation’s three refineries produced additional volumes of 4.6 million litres of kerosene and 7.7 million litres of diesel.
“This in addition to millions of litres of petrol being refined daily at the nation’s refineries.
“The assurances of availability of stock by the NNPC Chief Operation Officer of the Refineries yesterday still stands.”

UGHELLI—WOMEN of Orhorho community, Ughelli South Local Government Area,
Delta State, protesting incessant rape and attack by herdsmen,
barricaded the East-West Road, yesterday morning, preventing vehicles
from the Warri and Port Harcourt ends from passing through.
Vanguard learned that the mothers and daughters of the community,
numbering about 1,000, who sat on benches and woods on the expressway,
blocked the highway at about 7.30a.m., following a brutal attack,
yesterday morning, on a woman that went to the farm.

The victim, who fought off attempt by the herdsmen to rape her, was cut
several times with machete by her assailants, who left her for dead.
When other women in the community got to know about the incident, they
staged a protest and blocked the expressway in their community.
Police story
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, said the
police were aware of the peaceful protest by the women, and were
monitoring the action with a view to calming down nerves and clearing
the road.

While some of the women sat on the road, others demonstrated around the
area with placards, some of which bore the inscriptions “We don’t want
herdsmen on our land,” “Where is Okowa, come and rescue us,” “Security
agencies, do your work,” “No farm, no road for anybody to pass.”
Thousands of motorists and their vehicles were trapped in the ensuing
traffic snarl, while the women rejected entreaties by the police and
Army to vacate the road.
‘We want Okowa’
They vowed to remain on the road until Governor Ifeanyi Okowa addresses
them on the way out of the incessant attacks.
One of the women leaders told Vanguard: “We don’t want herdsmen on our
land. They are raping our women. The ones that refuse to be raped, they
will butcher them with cutlass. They are lords even in our bush with
their cattle.

“They have raped up to 10 women and some victims are dead.
“The woman that was attacked this morning is lying on the ground in
front of a chemist shop.”
Another villager added: “A native, Rufus, who went to the farm, was
killed December 25 last year; these people are armed with AK-47 rifles
and other sophisticated weapons.”
